Weird Bathroom Sinks and Toilets

This interesting aquarium toilet looks to be a very intricate decorative piece at first, but it is actually functional!Don’t worry, the fish don’t get flushed down with the water, because the water tank for the toilet is separated from the aquarium tank. Here we have a sink that is completely integrated with a beer barrel, custom-made. The sink is actually quite difficult to manufacture, as there is a certain amount of plumbing and structure required to mount. The wood is recoated and the top is re-finished with a hardening resin.

Finally, we have this gem. This toilet is one of the oddest you’ll see. The obvious issue here is that there are two seats. Most people I know don’t use the toilet together, so this creative piece will probably never find its way into my house. At least one thing’s for certain, you’ll never be lonely while you’re sitting on the can anymore!

How To Buy Furniture : The dining room table

A dining table is the centerpiece of any room it occupies. Interior designer Patrick McFarland of Madden-McFarland Interiors in Leawood says most of his clients want a formal table with a “wow” factor. If that’s the look you want, you probably want a veneered table. Good veneers have more dramatic patterning in the grain than solid wood. Veneers have been around since ancient Egypt, says furniture designer and restorer Albert de Leon, co-owner of De Leon Furniture in Kansas City, Kan. Done properly, they offer some advantages over solid wood. For example, they are less likely to warp or cup over time.

The best dining table, in de Leon’s, opinion is veneer over solid wood. Such tables are also the most expensive and most often seen at designers-only showrooms.“Veneer is great in the hands of a craftsman, but in factory furniture it is usually a cost-cutting measure. The slightest chip and you’ll see ugly particleboard underneath,” said Asa Christiana, editor of Fine Woodworking magazine.

Expenditure for office furniture criticized

The city's finance director, Candace Hong, told the City Council on Tuesday that the decision had been made to continue with Haworth and Herman Miller because they were the brands decided upon 15 years ago when the city occupied the new Civic Arts Plaza."We're only doing small module changes, and it makes more sense to go back and re-use the pieces that you've got, plus buy any additional amount you need from the manufacturer we've been using," Hong said. "It's more cost efficient."

Bill-de la Pena argued that 15 years ago when the Civic Arts Plaza was built, the city was "awash in cash" but that times have since changed."We should really look more closely at our expenditure in order to be less of a burden to the taxpayer," she said. When asked if council members had done enough to make sure taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely, Mayor Jacqui Irwin said she's convinced the city has acted prudently."Pure price is not always the top priority," Irwin said Thursday. "This is good quality commercial furniture, and over the long run it's the best way for the city to be financially responsible."

High formaldehyde levels found in some baby furniture

The California Air Resources Board last month approved rules to regulate formaldehyde emissions in composite wood products made, used or sold in the state.California officials have classified formaldehyde as an air contaminant since 1992. It's also considered a human carcinogen. A branch of the California Environmental Protection Agency has "basically said there's no safe level," Gibson said. According to the Environment California report, children continually exposed to formaldehyde at levels greater than 16 parts per billion indoors are more likely to develop coughing and allergies. At exposure levels above 50 parts per billion, children are at increased risk of developing asthma. The report found an oak crib, made by Child Craft, emitted the largest amount of formaldehyde.

The company, like most others, tests for lead in paint and developed its own tough measures for "structural integrity," said Child Craft President Bill Suvak.Formaldehyde is a concern only in composite wood and most of Child Craft's products are made from solid wood, Suvak said. The Child Craft crib, however, includes a mattress platform made from composite wood.

Bill aims to prevent furniture accidents

Assemblyman wants tipping protections to be prominently displayed on large items STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Legislation that would force manufacturers of TVs and furniture made and sold in New York to flag consumers about the possibility of hazardous and potentially deadly "tipping" has been introduced by a Staten Island lawmaker whose boyhood friend suffered just such a family tragedy. Nicholas Pierce was only 2-and-a-half when a dresser that he attempted to climb on top of, in his Cranford, N.J., home, tipped over, suffocating him. Nicholas' father, Westerleigh native Richard Pierce, went to Blessed Sacrament elementary school with Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid-Island), who has authored a bill that would mandate tipping protections be prominently displayed on large items that could be upended causing death or physical harm to youngsters. Avoiding a tragedy Assemblyman Michael Cusick's office offers the following tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission: Attach or anchor unstable furniture, like a bookcase or dresser, to the wall or floor. Place your TV on sturdy furniture appropriate for its size or put it on a low-rise base. Push your TV as far back on its stand as possible. Put electrical cords out of reach of children, and instruct children not to play with them. Remove items that may tempt children to climb on furniture.
